Planned water supply maintenance from 9 November to 21 November 2024

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing planned work in the identified areas, which will result in water supply disruptions. This critical maintenance work is done on our water-supply infrastructure to benefit customers. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.
Maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements:
Residents are advised to store enough water in advance, as a precautionary measure. Water should ideally be stored in clean, sealed containers.
Planned maintenance work will result in water supply disruption to these areas:
Viben
To enable the safe connection to the water network, the water supply will be shut off from 09:00 until 16:00 on Saturday, 9 November 2024. This water disruption will affect the entire Viben area, including Blackheath Industrial and the following streets: Silver, Kope, Chrome, Staal, Lood, Beatrix, Wessel Geldenhuys, Carel Marincowits, Goud Singel and Harbot Crescent. Residents and businesses are kindly advised to store water in advance in clean, sealed containers for domestic use during this period and to ensure that their taps are closed to avoid water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.
Steenbras Water Treatment Plant shutdown (Please note the new date)
This plant will temporarily shut down from Monday, 11 November 2024, until Wednesday, 13 November 2024, to enable the maintenance team to do routine maintenance. The reservoirs will be filled in advance. Residents are kindly requested to reduce their water consumption during this period.
Parts of Retreat
The water supply to parts of Retreat will be shut off from 09:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday, 12 November 2024, to enable the safe completion of construction work on the main water supply. The work involves connection of a newly installed water pipeline along Loch Road and Domingo Road to the water reticulation system. The following streets will be impacted: Sasmeer Road, Scottsville Road, Loch Road, Pieterse Close, Domingo Road, Lensie Way, Toring Way, Velma Road, Leytonstone Road and surrounding areas. Residents are kindly advised to store water in advance in clean, sealed containers for domestic use during this period and to ensure that their taps are closed to avoid water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.
Sea Point
The water supply to St Johns, London Road, and adjacent streets will be temporarily shut off from 09:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday, 12 November 2024, to facilitate the installation of a tee-piece and valve at the corner of Beach Road and London Road.
A second shut-off will occur from 09:00 to 17:00 on Thursday, 14 November 2024, to allow teams to install a new valve at the corner of Beach Road and St Johns Road. Residents are kindly advised to store enough water in clean, sealed containers for domestic use during these times and to ensure that taps are closed to prevent water loss or potential damage when the supply is restored.
Aurora, Durbanville Hills and Kenridge Heights
Emergency installation of 200 mm valves on the main feed from the Altydgedacht Reservoir will result in the water supply to be shut off from 09:00 until 19:00 on Wednesday, 13 November 2024. Residents are kindly advised to store water in advance in clean, sealed containers for domestic use during this period and to ensure that their taps are closed to avoid water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.
Hout Bay (advance notification)
The water supply to areas on the bounded by Disa River Road to Park Avenue will be shut off from 09:00 on Wednesday, 20 November 2024, until 17:00 on Thursday, 21 November 2024. This will allow for the safe installation of an air valve, fire hydrant and previously defective 250 mm isolation valves at the intersection of Bethal Street and Valley Road. Affected areas include: Hout Bay Main Road towards Ruyterplaats Drive including Riverside Terrace, Bethal Street, Welbevind Way, Martingale Avenue, Surcingle Avenue, Stirrup Lane, Victorskloof Road, Saddlers Close, Saddlers Row, Mangold Close, Valley Road, Blue Valley Close and surrounding streets. Water tankers will be strategically positioned along the route, with their locations to be communicated in advance of the shut-off period.
This work forms part of the Water and Sanitation Directorate’s proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme, which ensures the future continuity of water supply by addressing the issue of unaccounted for water.
Zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and conditional assessments will be done on the water supply network in the following areas:
Wednesday, 13 November 2024, from 10:00 until 16:00: Blomtuin, Blommendal and La Rochelle
The near zero-pressure testing is done to see if there are any unmapped inflows that need to be taken into account and identify the supply areas by the existing pressure reducing valves on site. Residents are advised to store water in advance in clean, sealed containers for use during this period and to ensure that their taps are closed to avoid water loss and/or damage when the supply is restored.
This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Strategy. Managing water pressure more effectively reduces the possibility of pipe bursts and water wastage.
The City regrets any inconvenience caused.
What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:
1. Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
2. All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
3. Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.
4. For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.
